Memorial bench at Canoe Beach for former Salmon Mayor Marten Bootsma

Bootsma was mayor of Salmon Arm from 2005 to 2011

Former mayor Marten 鈥淢arty鈥 Bootsma will be memorialized at one of his favourite locations in the community 鈥 Canoe Beach.

At its Mar. 25 meeting, council approved a memorial bench with a plaque to be placed there by the Bootsma family in honour of Marty.

鈥淚 know that Marty loved that place,鈥 said Mayor Alan Harrison. 鈥淗is family would like to have a memorial there.鈥

The family also had a cabin at Canoe Beach for nearly four decades.

Bootsma died in 2018 at the age of 69 after a brief battle with cancer. He was mayor of Salmon Arm from 2005 to 2011 and served six years as a councillor prior to 2005.

Bootsma attempted to become a candidate to replace retiring Liberal MLA George Abbott in the 2013 provincial election and ran unsuccessfully for mayor again in 2014.

He lived in Salmon Arm for more than 40 years and was also a member of the Rotary Club and a volunteer firefighter.
