A 91Ѽ chef is going for one of Canada’s top honours.

Neil Taylor, the executive chef at Home Block at CedarCreek Estate Winery is getting the chance to be named the top chef in Canada. He has been chosen to represent the Okanagan at Canada’s Great Kitchen Party’s Canadian Culinary Championship (CCC), which brings the gastronomic community together to connect and celebrate the country’s top talent.

He beat out other local chefs during a regional competition in fall 2023 to get the chance to compete in the culinary championship. The 91Ѽ chef won gold at the regional championship by making his Coppa di testa - peaches, brussels, mushrooms and truffle, which was paired with Cedar Creek’s 2020 Naramata Ranch Pinot Noir.

This year’s CCC is taking place on Feb. 2 to 3 in Ottawa, Ont. Taylor will be competing against chefs from Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and St. John’s. All 10 chefs will compete in a mystery wine competition, a black box challenge, and a grand finale.

In the mystery wine competition (taking place on the Friday night), the competitors will be tasked with making a meal that pairs with an unlabelled wine they receive less than 24 hours before the contest starts.

The black box competition is taking place on Saturday morning (Feb. 3) and is being held at the La Cité Culinary School. Additionally, the grand finale will be taking place on Saturday night at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa.

“We are excited to host our third Canadian Culinary Championship in the nation’s capital next February,” said Karen Blair, COO of Canada’s Great Kitchen Party. “With four Canadian Culinary Championship titles coming from the Ottawa-Gatineau Region (Marc Lépine twice, Yannick LaSalle and Briana Kim) the city’s culinary scene is very strong! We look forward to bringing the best chefs from across Canada to experience this scene as we celebrate the best of Canadian excellence in the culinary arts, sport and music.”

Over the years, Canada’s Great Kitchen Party has raised more than $17 million to support sports programs, music education in schools and food programs across Canada.
