It will be the most “Brutal” event of the season when residents, tourists and anyone who thinks they have the guts are tempted into a new challenge.

The Brutal BBQ Pepper Sauce Challenge is set to sizzle at Rustic Reel on May 25, where participants can prepare to be taken on 13 levels of scorching pepper sauce, where BBQ chicken wings and cauliflower wings for vegans take centre stage.

“Whether you’re a heat seeker or a spice novice, prepare to test your taste buds against our brutal pepper sauce challenge,” said Hayden Duval, the mastermind behind Brutal Condiments.

Known as the King of Brutal, Duval has been mixing, brewing, fermenting and cooking for years. But his most recent endeavour Brutal Condiments has seen the King at farmers markets and craft fairs throughout the province, hawking his spicy wares.

“In the heart of the Okanagan Valley, my passion for cooking and fermenting has blossomed into a mission—to showcase the extraordinary flavours that emerge from our local bounty. With each pepper and chicken sourced from our own backyard, I aim to not only support our community but also to ignite a spirit of togetherness,” said Duval.

Duval’s love for all things brutal led him to host a series of events where spice lovers could face their hottest challenge.

The first event on May 25, will see Jackfish Narrows take the stage to serenade challengers at the backyard BBQ and attendees will be treated to a complimentary beer.

For those who can’t beat the heat, there will also be waves of wings to suit every palate, said Duval.

“Through the fiery allure of a pepper sauce challenge, alongside the comfort of BBQ, the refreshing taste of local beer and the soulful melodies of local musicians, we’ll forge connections that endure beyond the plate. It’s more than just a culinary journey, it’s a celebration of our shared love for quality, community and the transformative power of fermented goodness,” explained Duval. “Really, I’m just trying to keep things brutal.”

Following the two challenges on May 25 at 5 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m., there are several other events planned:

•June 10: 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

•July 8: 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

•Aug. 12: 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

•Sept. 9: 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m

Complete all 13 levels, and you’ll earn your spot in the year-end draw for a chance to win fantastic prizes, making the challenge even more thrilling.
