A flag football league sponsored by the NFL is set to make its mark in Penticton.

The South Okanagan Football Association (SOFA) on Friday said it was bringing NFL Flag Football to Penticton for girls and boys between of ages of seven to 13.

Registration opened on March 1. Action for its inaugural season will run at McNicoll Park from April to June, said SOFA promotional coordinator Nicole Sackvie.

"This is another option (other than tackle football) to be inclusive and include everyone, bringing people together outdoors for some fun," Sackvie said.

"We're hoping to get three teams together. Depending on our numbers, we're hoping to perhaps make it bigger and expand."

The NFL first introduced the non-contact sport to youth in the 1990s, with the mission of teaching kids the basic skills and fundamentals of football.

Thousands of programs in communities across Canada and the United States have since popped up, with Penticton soon adding itself to the list.

"It's a lot of fun, and a little less intimidating as there isn't any contact," Sackvie said. "There's lots of running, but also pretty easy going and not too hard."

Flag football will also be included as an Olympic sport for the first time in 2028 when the games head to Los Angeles.

Registration information for Penticton's league can be found by emailing info.playsofa@gmail.com.
