School District 83 students will be planting over 2,000 seedlings as part of the Trees for Hope project during Earth Week April 21-25.

School District 83 is going green with the planting of over 2,000 tree seedlings for Earth Week.

Through the Trees for Hope project, which retired principal and environmentalist Kim Fulton helps coordinate, the district has been given conifer seedlings to plant for over 18 years through donations from tree nurseries and forest companies from all over B.C.

"We have access to trees again this year with the help of Kalamalka Forestry Research Centre," Fulton said in an SD83 media release on the continuing project.

The seedlings will be delivered during Earth Week from April 21 to 25, at which time students from 17 district schools and all StrongStart programs will plant them.

Fulton added that he believes many people are feeling eco-anxiety due to worldwide disasters, wars, and local risks like fires and floods, and thinks this project will help.

"Taking some sort of action helps relieve the feelings of hopelessness and helplessness," he said. "Planting trees is ONE action we can all take. I have never had anyone plant a tree and not feel good about it."

He added there are national and worldwide initiatives to plant trees "to sequester carbon and cool the planet."
